High levels of competition, EU environmental legislation requirements (in particular, PPWR), changing consumer preferences, and rising raw material prices are forcing beverage manufacturers to rethink their packaging approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a candidate country for EU membership, Ukraine must already be preparing for these changes. In this article, we have compiled the main innovative trends in beverage packaging and shown how Ukrainian manufacturers can implement them with the support of technology partners, in particular the company <strong>SPELS'<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trend 1: Lightweighting \u2014 reducing bottle weight<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Global brands are actively reducing the weight of PET bottles in order to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>reduce the cost of raw materials,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>optimize logistics,<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduce carbon footprint.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Coca-Cola HBC<\/strong> has already reduced the weight of a 500 ml bottle to <strong>19,9 g<\/strong> (30% less than 10 years ago), and 2-litre engines \u2014 to <strong>42,7 g<\/strong>. This will save <strong>5,000 tonnes of plastic by 2025.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For the Ukrainian market<\/strong> , this is a real tool for reducing costs, especially given the current prices for PET and logistics problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trend 2: AI design and digital packaging management<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial intelligence (AI) \u2014 a new driver of efficiency in packaging:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>predicts line wear and production stoppages;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>optimises packaging design for logistics and durability;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduces the defect rate through machine vision.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a study by ResearchGate, companies that have implemented AI in packaging have reduced costs by 8\u201312%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trend 3: Alternative materials \u2014 paper bottles, composites<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies such as <strong>Paboco<\/strong>, <strong>Carlsberg<\/strong> and <strong>PepsiCo<\/strong> are investing in the development of paper bottles with thin polymer barriers (&lt;15%). Such packaging:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>reduces CO\u2082 emissions to <strong>\u201360\u201390\u202f%<\/strong>;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>80\u201390% lighter than glass;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>appealing to eco-conscious consumers.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, more than <strong>38% of new packaging solutions in the EU<\/strong> contained at least one element of secondary or bio-based raw materials (Packaging Europe).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reality for Ukraine<\/strong>: this is promising for niche brands (water, juices, craft beer) that want to stand out on the shelf and declare their environmental responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trend 4: Active packaging \u2014 more than just packaging<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Active packaging technologies include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>temperature and freshness indicators;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RFID tags and QR codes;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>antibacterial coatings.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the beverage segment, active packaging allows for better control of logistics (especially in the cold chain) and ensures increased product safety. In addition, it helps to interact with consumers in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trend 5: Deposit system and tethered caps \u2014 EU requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The European Union has mandated the use of <strong>tethered caps<\/strong> \u2014 caps that remain attached to the bottle. By 2030, manufacturers are required to recycle at least <strong>65% of packaging<\/strong>. Starting from 2024, all plastic bottles must be equipped with caps that cannot be separated from the container. This increases the efficiency of waste collection and simplifies recycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A deposit system is a system whereby consumers pay an additional deposit when purchasing packaging (bottles or cans). When they return the packaging to a collection point, they receive their deposit back. This approach encourages reuse and collection of packaging.
